Update: Ja Morant Acted In Self-Defense During 2022 Physical Dispute w/ Teen, Judge Rules
Update: (Apr. 9, 2024): A judge ruled that NBA player Ja Morant acted in self-defense during a 2022 altercation with a then-17-year-old Joshua Holloway.
According to Holloway, he was punched by Ja Morant after he accidentally hit the professional athlete in the face with a basketball following a pick-up game. However, Ja Morant has always maintained his innocence, claiming the incident that took place at his Tennessee residence occurred after the then-minor “intentionally” threw the ball at him.
In addition, he previously claimed that he feared for his family’s safety as Holloway (allegedly) yelled he would “light his house up” as he was being escorted off the premises.
In January 2023, Holloway filed a lawsuit against Ja Morant for the alleged fight. The trial is reportedly set to kick off sometime this month.

Original Story: (Jan. 3, 2023): Ja Morant is facing unfortunate legal issues.
According to new reports, the Memphis Grizzlies player allegedly attacked a minor amid an argument following a basketball game at his home back in July.
Police documents state that a 17-year-old informed cops that prior to the verbal argument between the two, he was a player in a basketball game that took place at Ja Morant’s Tennessee residence. The lawsuit, which was filed in Shelby County back in September, claims that as the argument escalated the teen threw a basketball, “accidentally” hitting Ja Morant in the face.
The plaintiff says the Grizzlies point guard then approached him, put his chin on his shoulder, and asked a witness “should I do it to him?” According to the teen, Morant then punched him “with a closed fist, knocking him to the ground.” The legal documents add that Morant, 23, and another man followed up by jumping the minor, noting that the NBA player,
“continued [striking] him while on the ground.”

Reportedly, law enforcement claims following the incident, the teenager had “a large knot” on his head. In addition, the lawsuit mentions that authorities claim Morant admitted to punching the teenager but did so in self-defense.
Morant alleges the plaintiff threw the ball at him “intentionally” during the argument and “began to approach him as if he wanted to fight.” He also claims the man who jumped into the altercation is “his brother.”
According to documents, Morant told cops the 17-year-old verbally threatened him, saying he’d “light his house up” as he was being escorted off the premises. Morant claims that the alleged threat put his family in fear.
Following their investigation, police submitted the case to the District Attorney’s office on Oct. 4, however, the DA ultimately declined prosecution. It’s unclear what the plaintiff is seeking in the suit. Court records list Morant and his childhood friend Davonte Pack as defendants.
