‘The Talk’ Is Reportedly Facing Cancellation, May Be Replaced By Forthcoming Black Soap Opera ‘The Gates’

CBS is considering significant changes to its daytime TV lineup.

According to reports, the network is putting its full support behind a forthcoming soap opera titled The Gates, and may be ending The Talk to make room for the series.

As we recently covered, CBS is currently developing a new soap opera that will be the first to center around a Black family in nearly 35 years. Since soap operas are aired during daytime TV hours, just like talk shows, the network is reportedly looking at its current lineup to see which programs will stay and which will go. Unfortunately, The Talk, currently hosted by Sheryl Underwood, Amanda Kloots, Jerry O’Connell, Akbar Gbajabiamila, and Natalie Morales as moderator, became the lowest-rated show at CBS this season, putting it in the cancellation crossfire.

The Talk has been a CBS daytime staple since its premiere in 2010. Throughout its 14 seasons, the series held some notable hosts that helped make the show successful. If you recall, TV personality Sharon Osbourne had been with the show since its conception but was abruptly fired back in 2021 over controversial remarks she made during an intense exchange with co-host Sheryl Underwood.

Additionally, reports say the show has continued to go through management changes over the past few years. Longtime producer Kristin Matthews was reportedly one of a few executives who exited the series, leaving her position last June to The Late Show with James Corden executive producer Rob Crabbe. One report notes that Crabbe has been making necessary changes to help the series’ ratings by focusing on creating depth while interviewing stellar guests such as Taraji P. Henson. Still, reports say he simply needs more time to “make his mark.”

The Talk is reportedly the third most-watched talk show on the network, largely trailing behind competitors The View and Live! With Kelly and Mark. It’s also noted that the series has not yet been renewed for a 15th season. CBS has not commented publicly about the speculative reports at this time.
