The White Lotus actor Theo James—who played crafty finance bro Cameron Sullivan in Season 2 of the HBO hit—is back on the small screen in The Gentlemen, Guy Ritchie’s Netflix gangster series based on the director’s 2019 movie of the same name.
James plays Eddie Horniman, a moneyed Brit who inherits his father’s lavish country estate, only to realize that it’s part of industrial cannabis empire in London’s East End that’s run by shady underworld character Bobby Glass, played by Ray Winstone.
“To stop ourselves being associated with criminals, we are going to become criminals,” Horniman declares in the trailer. To outwit the gangsters at their own game, he joins forces with Susie Glass, played by Kaya Scodelario, who runs the weed-fueled criminal enterprise on her father’s behalf.
“I didn’t create this problem. I’m trying to help you deal with it,” she tells Horniman as he gets drawn into an underworld full of malevolent thugs.
The trailer intersperses scenes of Horniman’s verdant estate with images of a supercar chase, a boxing match, and automatic rifle fire, all while suitably scored to “I’m a Man” by The Spencer Davis Group.
Ritchie, who shot to fame with 1998’s London gangster-comedy Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, is basing the new Netflix series on his movie, The Gentlemen. Starring Hugh Grant, Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam and Colin Farrell, the stylish action flick portrayed an American expat who gets caught up in the messy sale of a U.K. drug operation.
The series co-stars Joely Richardson, Vinnie Jones, Giancarlo Esposito, Chanel Cresswell and Peter Serafinowicz. Ritchie created, co-wrote and executive produced the show.
The Gentlemen begins streaming on Netflix on March 7 for an eight episode run. Watch the trailer above.
