Out With the Old—In With the New: 4 Winter Trends I'm Ditching and 4 I'm Loving

I love the feeling of a new year. That clean slate and “the world is your oyster” kind of feeling the first few weeks of the year bring is something I wish I could bottle and sell. As we move into 2024, there are some lessons from the previous year to bring along with us and some to leave in the past. Trends work the same way. There are some we love so much we want to keep wearing on into our next chapter and some we’re ready to swap for an upgrade. Since 2024 is going to be my most stylish year yet, I had to do a little digging on the trends I’m loving for the New Year and the ones I’m leaving in the dust.

Keep scrolling to see which trends I’ll be wearing this year and which ones I’m kicking to the curb.

TikTok has a new style aesthetic taking my For You page by storm: the “mob/mafia wife” look. Think gold jewelry and black turtlenecks topped off with a big faux-fur coat to really commit to the look. By this definition, I have been having a “mob wife” winter for the past few, but celebrities, fashion people, and content creators alike are all making sure they have good faux fur to sport for the winter season. There is something very ’90s NYC about this trend that I love. It’s giving Carrie Bradshaw on New Year’s Eve. Sorry, puffer jackets—we’ll still be keeping you for trips to the slopes, but that’s about it.

Naked dressing was on everyone’s minds for 2023, and in 2024, we are keeping the revealing vibe going. While this trend can be intimidating, there are many ways you can tweak it to fit your personal comfort level. You can always throw a jacket over something or layer underneath with a good Skims bralette if you’re in the market for a little extra coverage. This trend is not only seductive but also one for the stylish and bold—two words I’m fully embracing for my 2024 style. This is the perfect look for a fun night out with friends or to pack on a girls’ trip. I personally am obsessed with the trend and am thrilled we’re still wearing little to nothing this year. Unfortunately for my corporate-dressing lovers, you don’t have to throw your blazers away, but you definitely have to leave them at home on a Friday or Saturday night.

Consider 2024 the year hosiery makes its comeback. We all love a pair of sheer tights, but fashion people everywhere are experimenting with different fabrics and colors of tights to add some wow factor to a look. Everyone’s obsession with cherry red has led to many red-legged looks, as we see above on Elsa Hosk, but bordeaux and lace pairs are rising in popularity. When you add fashionable tights, you’re letting everyone around you know how just how chic you actually are. Unfortunately for the baggy cargos I used to save and store for the weekends, it may be time to say goodbye.

It’s been about two weeks of the New Year, and there is only one shoe style everyone is drooling over: sleek pumps. YSL’s signature sexy stilettos have been clogging my Instagram and TikTok feeds like never before. I swear I’ve never seen so many Lee Pointed Toe Slingback Pump unboxing videos in my life. It’s not that I’m complaining, though. I’m just as obsessed as the next person when it comes to good pumps. Nothing adds a bit of power and seduction like stilettos, and they can up the sexy factor of virtually any outfit. Unlike clunky platform boots, these are all about streamlined sleekness made to make your feet and your outfit as sultry as possible. If you ask me, everyone needs at least one pair of sleek stilettos.
