Kerry Washington Reveals ‘I Used To Pin My Engagement Ring To My Undergarments’ So No One Would Know She & Her Now-Husband Nnamdi Asomugha Were Engaged

Kerry Washington has no regrets about keeping her relationship private.

The Scandal alum revealed the lengths she’d go to hide her romance with former NFL star and actor Nnamdi Asomugha from the public.

The couple privately tied the knot in 2013 and have since welcomed two children. Though they have kept their children and love life out of the spotlight, Kerry Washington had a rare moment where she opened up about their marriage.

During an appearance on SiriusXM’s This Life of Mine with James Corden, Kerry Washington was asked to select an item that was significant to her.

She chose a group of seashells that she gathered during her and Nnamdi Asomugha’s honeymoon in Zanzibar, which she called, “the happiest two weeks of my life.”

She explained her selection in part and told James Corden, 

“Whenever I look at that collection of shells, it reminds me of the space that we gave ourselves to start our life together as a couple in this really sacred way. You know, having this sort of very private, secretive wedding and then just jumping off into this very remote place to really begin our lives together. I love that. I love that jar. It always makes me feel so grateful for the life that I have.”

Considering she was starring in one of Shondaland’s most popular shows when they wed, one would think it’d be nearly impossible for them to keep their engagement out of the public. Washington explained how and continued,

“I used to pin my engagement ring to my undergarments because I loved my ring so much, so I would sleep in it at night, and then in the morning, I would pin it to my undergarments so that nobody knew we were engaged.”

She pointed out that she wasn’t the only star in the relationship, as Nnamdi Asomugha was also at a peak in his career.

“He had a groundbreaking, record-breaking contract that he had just walked through, and he had been in three or four Pro Bowls, you know. When I met him, he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated, and I was on this hit show. It just felt like there was a lot of public energy around our careers, but we kept our relationship very private when we were dating, I think mostly because we just wanted to protect ourselves and each other.”

Washington also referenced her former engagement to David Moscow, whom she split from in the mid-2000s.

“I think it’s really hard when people have a lot to say about your relationship, and I had been in a really public engagement that when it ended, I was in the unfortunate position of being on the cover of a bridal magazine and it was a bridal magazine that came out quarterly, so for three months I walked around and I thought, ‘I think I’m done talking about my personal life in the public.’”
