Fantasia Barrino & Danielle Brooks Trend Online As Public Reacts To Oscar Nominations: ‘I’m So Elated For Danielle[…]But I’m Devastated For Fantasia’
The 2024 Oscar nomination list was released this morning (Jan. 23) and it’s already the talk of social media!
While internet users celebrated a few noteworthy contenders, including first-time nominee Danielle Brooks for her performance in “The Color Purple,” many have shared their disappointment that Fantasia Barrino‘s performance from the same film didn’t make the cut.
Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks both began trending shortly after the full list dropped. Fans reacted to the songstress notably being missing from the Best Lead Actress category, while celebrating Brooks‘ nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Following the premiere of “The Color Purple” remake last month, many felt Barrino’s stellar portrayal of Celie would certainly earn her a nomination. However, according to the Academy, it seems the 39-year-old faced some tough competition. Actresses who did make the list include Lily Gladstone (who made history as the first Native American actress to receive a lead actress nom), Emma Stone, Carey Mulligan, Annette Bening, and Sandra Hüller.
Reacting to the “American Idol” winner being snubbed, with some also noting Margot Robbie’s performance in the billion dollar “Barbie” film being slighted, as well as Barrino’s co-star Taraji P. Henson missing from the Best Supporting Actress category, many expressed their frustrations. Some also shared their conflicting feelings due to Brooks’ breakout performance being recognized by the Academy. One user wrote:
“I’m so elated for Danielle Brooks. She was f*cking INCREDIBLE in ‘The Color Purple’, but I’m devastated for Fantasia. She was equally as amazing and definitely deserved at the very least a nomination for her performance. RIDICULOUS.”
While another added:
“I know I’ve been rooting for Fantasia but Danielle Brooks is so deserving of her nom. She was the standout in the movie. Yay.”
Many others seem to share the same opinion.
A few also felt “The Color Purple” should’ve been nominated in categories for Best Picture, though it was notably missing from the list as well. Despite the disappointments, there were quite a few other noteworthy first-timers along with Brooks that social media agreed deserved Academy recognition. Among the other nominated performances include Jeffrey Wright for “American Fiction,” Sterling K. Brown for “American Fiction,” Da’Vine Joy Randolph for “The Holdovers,” as well as Euphoria star Colman Domingo for “Rustin.” Domingo also made history as being the first Black openly gay actor, and second of all time, to be nominated for their portrayal of a gay character.
