Cam Newton Fight At Youth Football Tournament Started After ‘A Lot Of Trash Talk’ From NFL Player, Coach Claims: ‘Nobody’s Seeing How He Was Talking Crazy The Past 2 Days’

Update (Feb. 27): TopShelf Performance, the youth football organization involved in a physical altercation with Cam Newton, is speaking out.

Coach TJ Brown, co-CEO and wide receiver specialist at TopShelf Performance (TSP) first offered an apology to the parents, bystanders, and anyone who was offended, during an interview with Atlanta’s 105.3 The Beat.

“That should’ve never happened. We should’ve been able to sit down and talk. There’s no reason we should be yelling at each other while a game [is] going on. Ain’t none of that necessary.”

Shedding light on what led up to the fight, TJ Brown said,

“Cam [Newton] has an organization. It’s not just one team, it’s an organization. It’s just been a lot of trash talk, more so his side. Just out of nowhere, just talking crazy to us for no reason. It’s not nothing new. I’ve been around for five years, so this, typical Cam Newton behavior.”

He added that he was walking up the steps when he noticed Cam Newton in his younger brother Coach Steph Brown’s face, making statements like,

“‘I made y’all. I’m responsible for everything y’all do.’ Then he grabbed Steph. So me … my little brother … I’m walking up a flight of steps and I see a 6’6″ guy grabbing my brother … That’s what everybody’s seeing. Nobody’s seeing how he was talking crazy the past two days.”

TSP also issued an apology on its Instagram Story Monday (February 26). See the full statement below.

As of publication, Cam Newton has not publicly responded to the incident.

Original Story (Feb. 26): NFL MVP Cam Newton appears to have gotten into a fight during a football tournament.

In a video that surfaced online Sunday (February 25), two people appear to shove and push Cam Newton before the altercation moves towards a fence line. That’s where you can see Cam Newton, wearing his custom-made hat in the video, dragging someone by their hood while trying to fight off another individual who wrapped himself around the athlete’s body. A police officer and event security personnel eventually stopped the fight.

At this time, it’s unclear what caused the altercation. We Ball Sports, an apparel and sports media company, organized the event. Newton runs C1N, a youth sports organization that sponsored a team in the tournament.

While speaking to The AthleticNehemiah Mitchell, the co-founder of We Ball Sports, said everyone involved in the brawl, including Newton, was removed from the event. He noted his reaction to the incident,

“Just an unfortunate situation.”

Cam Newton last played in the NFL in the 2021 season.

The 2010 Heisman Trophy winner at Auburn and first overall pick in the 2011 draft, Newton was the Carolina Panthers quarterback for nine of his 10 years as a professional athlete, earning league MVP honors and leading Carolina to the Super Bowl after the 2015 season.

He also played one season in 2020 with the New England Patriots.

Outside of sports, the N.F.L. superstar keeps himself busy. Newton has his own podcast called ‘Funky Friday’ and appears on other podcasts and media outlets to talk about football and his life.
